A slip-and-fall in a commercial environment is the most expensive incident most operations face. The right anti-slip floor is preventative liability protection, not a luxury spec. Insurance carriers know this; many require slip-rated flooring in defined zones (food prep, wash-down, ice machines, freezer access).
Anti-slip is not the same as rough. Aggregate broadcast into a primer coat then sealed under a topcoat builds the slip resistance into the system itself, where it stays. Prep slab to system
Each zone's slab is diamond-ground to the system's prep profile, contaminants and old coatings removed, cracks filled, and the surface left clean and ready for the primer coat.
Prime and broadcast
The primer or body coat is applied to the prepped slab, and aggregate (silica, quartz or proprietary) is broadcast into the wet coat at the correct loading to achieve the target slip rating.
Topcoat and verify
The topcoat is applied at the right thickness to lock in the aggregate while leaving the texture proud, the floor cures to spec, and the finished slip resistance is verified against the target rating.
Where it goes wrong
Anti-Slip Has to Match the Use
The most common anti-slip failure we see is aggregate that is too coarse for the use (a kitchen floor with abrasive broadcast that destroys mops and shoes) or too fine for the use (a wash-down area where the slip rating is gone after a month). The system has to match the environment.
We size aggregate, loading and topcoat thickness to your specific use, not a generic spec. Coordinate with adjacent commercial floor repair if the existing floor has failed sections and with the rest of our commercial floor systems in the building.
Slip ratings, aggregate types, wear life and where anti-slip is non-negotiable.
Industry slip-resistance tests (such as dynamic coefficient of friction) measure how much grip a floor provides under wet and dry conditions. We specify the system to meet or exceed the target rating for your environment, and verify the finished floor against that target.
Silica sand is the standard for general anti-slip; quartz aggregate is more decorative and harder-wearing; proprietary aggregates exist for specific environments (chemical resistance, high-temperature). We pick based on use, durability and look.
A properly built system, aggregate broadcast into the body coat and locked under the topcoat, holds its slip rating for years. Surface-sprinkled aggregate fails much faster. The system construction is what makes the difference.
Slightly, yes, the texture catches more dirt than a smooth floor. But modern auto-scrubber pads and the right cleaning chemicals make it manageable in any commercial maintenance routine. We share cleaning guidance with the maintenance team at handoff.
Often, yes. A textured coating can sometimes be applied over a clean, sound existing floor to add slip resistance without removal. When the existing floor is already failing, full system removal and replacement is the honest answer.
